Education and tech talk

The Shifted Librarian takes notes at Internet Librarian 2005. Highlights of interest (all boldfacing is mine):

The New Read/Write Web: Transforming the Classroom (Will Richardson's keynote talk:

changes for teachers:
old classroom - limited, proprietary resources; “pushed” learning
new classroom - extensive, open resources; “pulled” learning
- if we have access to the information, which only 75% of American kids do

showed the linear algebra course from MIT Open Courseware
includes video lectures; can go through the entire class this way (*if* you’re self-motivated)

the entire South African High School curriculum is on a wiki!!

Yeah, so... wouldn't it be great if the Johnston curriculum were on a wiki? Curriculum planning could go on all year round!

My first attempt to issue e-mail with a weblink for a weather forecast in Redlands had technical difficulties; let's try again:

Candlelight Vigil for Peace and Justice @ UOR Sunday

Autumn.

Hey all,

This is happening during the reunion weekend, so I thought I'd pass it along...

Candlelight Vigil for Peace and Justice

On this coming Sunday evening, February 15, from 7:00-7:30p.m., there will be a candlelight vigil for peace and justice at the fountain in Hunsaker Plaza at the University of Redlands. This vigil is connected with a global effort taking place on the first anniversary of the historic day when more than 10 million people demonstrated worldwide against the impending war on Iraq.

It is our hope and prayer that people will come together to demonstrate to this community our shared commitment to peace and to justice around the world. It is not our intention to have any speeches or to turn this into a political rally. We will gather prayerfully and, for the most part, silently, to let our community know that we are working for peace and justice in a nonviolent and loving way. (My office will provide the candles.) At the conclusion of the candlelight vigil at 7:30pm, we will invite all those who are interested to join us in the Hunsaker Plaza Café for individual discussions and for the sharing of ideas of what we can do to help make this a reality.

Because.

This is a mockup of what a Johnston website might look like. Right now it's lame because:

  • only I can post
  • no syndication
  • the URL ought to be even more obvious, like http://www.johnstoncollege.net

You know how when your only tool's a hammer, every problem starts to look like a nail?

If a big semi-formal banquet sounds un-Johnstonian to you (or if you just don't make your reservations on time), there are alternatives.

Briana and I have been hoping to (dis)organize some kind of stone soup -style dinner in the Bekins kitchen, although we have been somewhat stymied by lack of definitive word on whether the kitchen has already been reserved.

At any rate, I will be making an announcement (I hope) at the community meeting, but anyone who is interested is welcome to contact Briana and/or myself right now to discuss the possibilities.
